Sunday @ The Store - Clevedon

We have had a wonderful day at the store in Clevedon - the weather was delightful and every one was in good spirits (the all Black win could have had a little to do with it - I don't watch much Rugby but do love to beat South Africa and the Ozzies).

We also have a few new bits and pieces a gorgeous oak set of draws - we have renewed them to there former glory and wooden turned candle stick which will be a regular feature.

Just come to hand are two original works previously not exhibited of my collection 'Imagined faces'. 'Imagined faces' is a collection I completed in 2008 for a solo show called First. The collection was inspired by the role of honor at the Auckland war memorial museum - which is all names and no faces - these are the faces that I imagined went with the names.

I love text on anything really - I have tried to do it myself as an artist but it never is quite right. Oh to be as clever with words as Artists John Renoylds (an Art New Zealand article) or the new Elliot Collins (link shows his work at the Tim Melville gallery).

So I am having a love of text day - here is the wonderful work of Colleen Pugh which I have framed up her 'lemon' A5 and 'Champange' A3 limited edition prints and Ruth Sumner's gorgeous cushions which I never stop loving - they are stuffed with duck and made from found blankets which is just sooo devine - both artists available at Workroom//the store Clevedon.

Side cabinet + angle 'table' lamp

We have just finished this bespoke side cabinet make from solid sustainability farmed oak. I wanted the timber to be that main feature so the design is very clean with tuned legs and handles and of course being Scandinavian influenced.

I also took the opportunity to photograph our wooden 'angle' table lamp in a pepper shade.

New coffee/side table

Here is a coffee table (could be used as a side table) we have just finished. I have always been in love with this coffee table that my mother has at her place that was my great aunt Helen's and I have wanted to do my own interpretation of it. The table is of the mid century rendering and I really like the style - green and turquoise tiles with Rimu surround . We have selected 100% recycled oak and used plain white tiles for our response and I am really pleased with the outcome. I will post some more photos when there is better light.

Vest Design Store - Queenstown

Things have been rather hectic since my return from our wee excursion to the south and I haven't had a chance to write about our stockist in QT. Vesta Design Store is situated right on the lake, I could think of worse locations!

Unfortunately my timing was not impecable arriving a week after the high lake level the store was taking the opportunity for a well deserved break. So I got some snaps from the outside and through the window. The store is in the most delightful little cottage and Kim the stores owner has set up the rooms like actual rooms - just gorgeous!

I am hoping to make a return trip as soon as we can.

The habit of continuously running

The dates are set. I said I like dead-lines well shesh this one is getting close. As I mentioned earlier two of my fellow graduates and friends, Yolunda Hickman and Michelle Beattie, and I are having a exhibition (of art).

It opens on the 17th of June at 5.3o pm with a wee celebration and we have some beautiful boutique vinos for the evening being supplied by a friend of mine Craig Burke who represents - Makaraka Estate and Amor Bendall. Aren't we spoilt - thank you very much.

The la Gonda Arcade on Karangahape Road is the venue, it is a great and interesting space. Keep an eye on the developments and progress on exhibitions blog: the habit of continuously running.

Honey design - coptic stitched journals

Just arrived are these gorgeous coptic stitched journals made by Lisa Waldren at Honey Design. They come in A5 and A6 with native bird imagery on the front. Hard covered and with 110gsm cartridge paper on the inner then they are bound with linen thread.

Winter hours

Just letting everyone know that we are down to our winter hours. SO Saturday 10-4 Sunday 9-2 or of course by appointment. Oooh this means I get to spend Mondays and Tuesdays in my 'Garagio' (garage/studio).

Port Chalmers Design Store

Our next stop on our tour is Port Chalmers Design Store, situated in the beautiful Port Chalmers about 15 mins out of the centre of Dunedin. It was wonderful to see our work in the flesh in store and meet co-owner Becs Wilson. Becs Wilson, as my tour guides worked out within minutes, lives in the house next door to my partners late grandfather - apparently this is common in Dunedin!

The store is in a gorgeous 1970's shop with a lovely quality to it (aluminum and veneer sliding doors) this also resinates in some of the selection of display cabinetry - very nice! The stone wall is a delightful point of difference and really sets off the stores selection of work. I have also always been a fan of the stores branding and seeing it on the store windows was great especially fantastic when a minute later we were treated to the actual inspiration getting guided into the harbour by a brave wee tug boat.

Port Chalmers Design Store has also so started a facebook page so be sure to 'like' them oh and remember to 'like' us (workroom) also if you haven't already!!

Here are some beautiful shots from our new stockist WHITEROOM in Dunedin (and one of our turned lamp getting ready to go on display). As it was my maiden voyage to Dunedin, I was overwhelmed by its beauty and historical buildings - we did strike it on a sunny and still day (so my tour guides were telling me - my partner Paul and his Mum and John).

So more to my excitement, when arriving at WHITEROOM, it is situated in one of the oldest buildings on Moray Place, Dunedin and just a door or so down from the Dunedin art gallery - how convenient (will write about that later). First to greet us was Greg Lewis (click to see his work), wearing a Chuck Close portrait t-shirt I might add, we appeared to hit it off. Greg is of the fine arts persuasion and this comes through in the store with the sensitivity and considerations of the stores layout as well the selection of artists and designers. It is all not all down to Greg though, as then we met the stores owner Nick Scott - who we have thank for creating this very impressive space and promoting local design.

So all and all we were thrilled that both Nick and Greg are partial to our work, so from now on please find our collection in WHITEROOM in amongst a fine selection of the cream of New Zealand design.

New Trestle Legs and Table tops

Hello, we have been working on new trestle legs and table tops. The trestle legs will be available in white, yellow and natural at this stage. Tops will be available bespoke with the options of laminated timber and 30 mm ply wood. The pictured combination is in Kauri in Natural lacquered finish.

We have just completed this 100% recycled timber, butcher block. It is stunning. We have finished it naturally with a danish oil and it is mounted on castors with breaks. It really could tell a few stories as there are many different timbers all coming from different places - Tawa a NZ native and Oregon from North America which we came across in 'found' pallets. This of course is one of a kind.

Spontaneity

My two friends and I, Michelle Beattie (who I have some of her photography work in store) and Yolunda Hickman, are preparing for an exhibition. We went to art school together and are rather like minded although our work is different I am very excited about working with them. I love the process of working towards a show and having a DEADLINE - love deadlines. The show will be in mid June and I will share the details once they come to hand.

Anyway all this show business has made me get to work on my art and get creative which appears to have rubbed off on me in my design practice and this morning I rather 'poetic' with my signs so I thought I would share. And another point about my signs, I really like the black board format, albeit high maintenance and not rain friendly it allows for these spontaneous moments.

Lastly another spontaneous moment was Willie, our geriatric Jack Russell terrier, decided last night to jump up on our shelving and sit himself amongst the artifacts. He still has it!

Lest we forget

ANZAC day (period) always makes me reflect, not just for the obvious reasons, but reflecting the wider picture - it is a time that we need to remember what is important and for me it is a day that I like to spend with my family and loved ones.

I love getting my poppy and wear it with a balance between humbleness and pride.

Raow//Project:001 Floor lamp

Just arrived in store is Raow Project:001 Floor lamp. After the sale we have made a lot more room for other artists work, and I have wanted to have this light in our stable for a long time. It is made from a router cutter, designed to come flat packed as well as having a eco bulb these all contribute to sustainability and like us it is a product with a conscience.

It can be used as a pendant lamp as well as it is titled a floor lamp. The lamp glows architectural patterns and has a lovely ambient glow...

Raow is relocating to Europe so we only have very limited stock

Zekiah and Renee

Coming into winter I think of lovely soups, mmm... Chunky pumpkin (I have just made a batch).

And I can just see it served in Zekiah's beautiful soup bowls.... I love the 'avocado' coloured ones at the moment - they come as 'innies' and 'outies' (colour on the inside or outside)

Also

New from Renee Boydd are these 'home' ceramic art works. They come in two sizes and can be wall mounted and there is a mint toned one which I am fancying.

I think I am in the middle of a 'green' crush...

Oooh and a little birdy tells me that Sarah is a judge in the 'Best' design awards this year, in the graphic design section - thats pretty cool I think!

I just got in from an exciting day shooting our pieces in the studio. I really love doing this and seeing our work in the crisp studio. Tony our photographer is such a great guy that really wants to do the best he can for you- making sure the lighting is perfect- lighting lights can be quite tricky. Thanks to Dad and Paul who transported the table in and out and thanks to Kylie for being the best assistant as well as taking these wonderful snaps. Lastly thanks to Jafa for there wonderful tuna nicoise and ceasar that we had to celebrate after.

Cornelia Parker 'No man's land'

Very EXCITED about the Cornelia Parker show at Two Rooms gallery. We went along to the opening tonight and it was delightful to see a snippet of her work in the flesh. I have just borrowed the above images from the Two rooms website- they are not exactly what was on show. There was a trumpet rendered in the same way that the silver teapot is (pictured). One in tact and one squashed- I was quite taken with this piece- pure elegance!

I liked the series of smaller works also- wire drawings very subtle but still in there own way captivating and then there was, I don't know the official word for it, but paper folded and then opened up to reveal prints- but done with snake venom and antidote- black and white in coloring these were quite special (please forgive me if I have not quite got the details of these works correct)

A really nice surprise, so often the 'B' list artist is like the wind beneath the wings, was the up stairs show by Joachim Bandau, with a series of mesmerising water colours. I really like them. Very delicate. I have not come across this artists work before but I am certainly intrigued to find out some more.

So all and all a show well worth visiting! On till the 11 of April at Two Rooms gallery, 16 Putiki Street, Newton.

Welcome to Michelle Beattie

Please welcome Michelle Beattie. Michelle and I went through Whitecliffe together and in fact we met on our very first day at art school and have remained very good friends since.

This is a photographic series titled Out of the blue and into the black, taken from a song title that Michelle finds her self repeating or revisiting subconsciously (not unlike when we get a song stuck in our heads). She draws parallels from these subconscious and 'half aware states' to these 'i've seen a million times before' grey days that she has photographed.

In capturing these scenes, which we might normally overlook, Michelle contemplates them and makes up her own narratives of what might be unfolding- "these scenes are not demanding anything from me."

In a time when hard hitting and shock value photography appears to be at the forefront these images are a breath of fresh air. They are familiar, emotive and some-what comforting. I have always had a soft spot for Michelle's sensitivity in her aesthetic- the subtlety of the greens and greys are truly superb.

I am really quite excited about this painting by Richard Lewer. He has a show on at the Orexart gallery (opposite the New gallery- Auckland city) titled You can't win them all, running till march 6. He won the Wallace awards in 2008 with a work on a pool table like surface (it might actually have been a found pool table-not sure) with a chalk-like line drawing, for some reason seeing these works makes that work appear a lot stronger. Anyway, very inspirational (for lack of a better word) quick march- off to the studio!

I am fond of birds and horses...

These are a series of drawings that I have done over the last few years. Growing up on a farm I was never far from a horse and I was always attempting to draw them- so therefore I have had ALOT of practice. Birds, a newer found fondness, are a wonderful subject matter. I Don't think I'll be busting out the oil paints however, I find them complicated enough in grey tones.

This is a drawing (these are prints of) done by great aunt Helen Brown when she was aged 14. She was a celebrated Auckland artist in the 1950's and 1960's and was represented by the John Leech gallery. Her more famous works were more minimal/simplified seascapes in oils, they are quite breath taking. But the above work has been with me since I was a child- it was beside my bed at night- I used to imagine being in the night scene with the witches and creatures. It is my most precious possession.

Having Helen in our family has alway 'pre-laid' a path for myself, as she was successful in her pursuit, therefore my career has appeared more tangible- if that makes sense. Although I never knew her as an adult, she passed when I was six, I feel i have some sort of connection to her. I often think and wonder what she would do in situations that I find myself in.

So thank you Helen

I hope to organise a exhibition to honor her next year.

Welcome to Brendan van den Bosch's covetable three colour silkscreen prints. They really capture your eye as well as playing with words, messages and social commentary- these works operate on many levels- as good work dose. DS stool revisited

We have just completed this stool in the lighter toned timber. Dad and I have always made this stacking stool, right from when we first started our practice- and I cannot take the full credit on design. This was Dads Idea and we have refined it over time.

They are made from 100% recycled timber and the dark toned stools are primarily mahogany and the light toned are a combination of Tawa and Vitex- farmed sustainably in the Solomon islands.

Very pleased that we had some off cuts of timber to recreate this covetable design.

Our New Table Design- Saw horse Table

Hello, sorry that there hasn't been any posts in a while. This one should make up for it. This is our NEW design- I am so thrilled with it (I didn't have my camera with me today so these shots are taken from my phone so they are not the best) I couldn't wait to share.

This piece is made from 100% recycled timber and there is a blend of Kauri and Rimu. The design is something that we have wanted to do for a while as the 'trestle' table has been voguish of late- This is more of a saw horse interpretation- I feel that this marries in with our over all ideas and feel.

I can't stop staring at it... She's a beauty!

Ecological Outdoor Furniture

This is a design that we have been working on and off for the last three months. We wanted to do an outdoor table, purely because we like this timber called Vitex. Vitex is directly marketed against other hardwood timbers such as Kwila as is comes from a sustainable source.

I like it as it ages gracefully in the elements and ends up a beautiful silver tone and refrains from giving you splinters. The design itself uses stainless steel hinges allowing the pieces to be folded down compacted for storage. The Vitex dose have a wonderful hard quality to it and has a life expectancy of approximately 40 years, mainly used in decking we look forward to using this ecological product more and more.

Our New Butcher Blocks

After moving into our new house we were really struggling for bench space, we have always made butcher blocks in the past, but this one is a slightly different design. We had one like it when we grew up on the farm and I have always wanted one. The castors give it a semi- industrial spin and the handle harks to 'high school science block'. I am just thrilled with it so I thought I would share.

She lives and works out of Wellington with a background in fashion she has decided to sway towards designing her own ranges of home adornments including these covetable cushions and tea-towels. With my collection of bird studies and sketches I just couldn't resist.

Clevedon Christmas Parade

In the weekend WORKROOM went in the Clevedon Christmas Parade! It was so fun giving out little presents and of course the classic Macintoshes (my favourite has always been mint) to the children and families. It was a hot blistering day with a huge crowd we danced and sung along side the WORKROOM Christmas tree (all high on sugar from the over consumption of Macintoshes) . So a successful day giving to local community and we all retired exhausted with sore jaws from chewing and throats from "we wish you a merry christmas"

Game- GRADUATING EXHIBITION (part one)

Hi there,

It has been a busy time and I haven't had a chance to write of late. I have just graduated from Whitecliffe college with a bachelor of fine arts. These images are from my graduating exhibition. Held on the 26th of November. It was a wonderful occasion celebrating 4 years of work and learning- I was a bundle of nerves, excitement, sadness and happiness. Thank you to all of my friends and family that came along to support me. And I would like to especially thank the fine arts faculty at Whitecliffe who have guided me through- Thank you Noel, Jill, Steve, Erich, Matt.

Here is the artist statement that accompanied this work:

Seeded from anecdotes and everyday interactions, Snelling gathers, studies and observes these experiences to respond and comment. She exercises her role as an artist operating with no fixed premise and oscillating from a heavy-handed rigour to a hands-off director. Snelling believes that her idea will tell her how best to execute it and how this decision of methodology will support or take the idea further. Themes of nostalgia and human critique are examined in this exhibition and are presented both metaphorically and literally through games, sports and animals. We are asked to think about aspiration for success and fear of failure as well as how we can be misinterpreted and misunderstood by others as a fact of human nature.

“My art is autobiographical and I cannot be separated from it, although at the same time, I hide behind its many layers and guises”.

Marti Friedlander

I was fortunate enough to run into Marti Friedlander today at the Parnell photo centre- I have my photo taken there once a week as a part of a project that I am doing- I happen to know that she has a show on at the Gus fisher Gallery (runs until the 21st)at the moment. It was a perfect way to open a conversation as we both stood there waiting. I felt all shy as I know so much about her, being one of my favourite photographers, but I felt star struck and quite uncomfortable in her presence- good uncomfortable of course.

The photo above is one of her portraits of Rita Angus- which there is also, as most will know, a Rita Angus show on at the Auckland Art Gallery (new gallery) at the moment. This image is apart of the Rita Angus show.

wow the complexity of the feathers is quite mind boggling. This is the first of a series that I am doing for my end of year show.

They will be shown along side my pig at this stage.

I am really enjoying spending some time with the humble chook.

Just to show some latest snaps from what happening at Workroom.

1. Helen Brown work of Olive Grove- by day and night... This work was created when Helen was 14.

2. This is the beginning of our new range of shelving units... Nice- with castors and draws.

3. Power pole. Hat racks. Both in 100% recycled timber- Tawa and Mahogany. These are possibly my favourite product we have made.

4. Floor Zed lamp in a new wood finish. Gorgeous!

Presently the line of enquiry informing Snelling’s practice is based around human behavior and existence. Zeroing in on how one navigates there way through existence and how there are or are not boundaries or parameters in different contexts. Rebecca chooses to render this present line of enquiry through the investigation into various sports and there sets of rules. She also metaphorically aligns these set of rules with animal behaviour and human interaction with animals.

She draws from her own observations and experiences, the beginning stages frequently arrive from a personal memory. There is an autonomous quality to the way the work is experimented with and its resolved execution. This is not without the consideration of wider readings from the viewer. Snelling is concerned with the viewers response allowing an open ended nature to her work. She encompasses this somewhat puzzling and confronting showcase with her consistent attention to material and formal concerns. These concerns also respond to her exhibiting space and/or site specific that manages to convince her harshest critic which more often than not is herself.

I have a fondness for Steve Price

This is apart of my drawing series "I have a fondness for...." I researched Steve Price and the Auckland warriors. I was humbled by the culture surrounding the team. There is a great emphasis on family and education. This in a complex contemporary society seams very desirable being apart of a supportive guided network. Where as often one can feel lost and isolated.

Being the captain of the team Price is a role model. The treatment of my pencil work is a traditional tonal study. This is one that can be traced back to antiquity... It makes me think of Pricey in this Roman or Greek warrior light.
